PM Proposes Toyota to Consider Establishing an Exchange Program between Cambodian and Japanese Employees

Tokyo, Japan: Prime Minister Hun Manet of the Kingdom of Cambodia has urged Toyota to explore the possibility of establishing an exchange program between Cambodian and Japanese employees. This initiative aims to strengthen the bonds of knowledge, professionalism, culture, and tradition between the people of the two countries.

During a courtesy call with Mr. Ichiro Kashitani, Board Member, Chairman, and CEO of Toyota Tsusho Corporation, on the morning of December 19, 2023, Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized the importance of such an exchange program. The meeting took place as part of the 50th ASEAN-Japan Forum, held from December 15 to 19, 2023, in Tokyo, Japan.

Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomed the meeting with Mr. Ichiro KASHITANI and his team and expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the company. He noted the significant decision to establish a Toyota assembly plant in Cambodia.

The Prime Minister pointed out that the inauguration of the Toyota car assembly plant in 2014 coincided with the 71st anniversary of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Japan. This alignment signifies the growth and development of the bilateral relationship. He graciously accepted an invitation to preside over the inauguration ceremony of the Toyota assembly plant in 2024.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Hun Manet conveyed his confidence that the operation of the Toyota car assembly plant would lead to progress for the company. It is expected to create quality job opportunities and enhance the skills of Cambodians in automotive engineering.

Simultaneously, Mr. Ichiro Kashitani expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Hun Manet for accommodating him and his colleagues during the courtesy call. He provided an update on the company's business activities and the progress of setting up the Toyota assembly plant in Cambodia. The plant is on track to be completed by mid-2024. He also extended his appreciation to the Royal Government of Cambodia for creating a conducive environment that facilitates the smooth operation of the company's business. Mr. Kashitani expressed confidence in further expanding Toyota's investments in Cambodia.

Established in 1948, Toyota Tsusho Corporation currently operates around 1,000 subsidiaries across various sectors, including metallurgy, assembly and logistics, power machinery and projects, chemicals and electronics, food, and services.
